Circa 1930’s HOPI Brocaded Dance Sash # 2
Two panels consisting of
finely
hand-woven of cotton yarn and decorated using brocade weaving method with weft brocading of red, green and black aniline dyed wool illustrating the ‘Broad Face’ Katsina (Kachina).
This sash is also older, probably dating to the 1930s.  It is funny as they ran out of one color of green yarn on one side and ended up using a mix of two shades of green to finish out one side.  I just hung it on the wall with the side with one shade of green showing.  Each panel measures about 10 inches by 45.5 inches, not counting the fringe.  As with the others, there is staining, body paint and discoloring from use and minor bleeding of the wool colors.  I really like the edge ticking and the sort of checkerboard band at the top of the brocaded section.  That band would be a maker's mark.
Normal wear, tear and losses commensurate with age of artifact.
